Jade — A Bridge Between Cultures, Across Time

Few materials have travelled as far — or meant as much — as jade. From Mughal imperial workshops to the Chinese court of Qianlong, from the shores of Lake Baikal to the auction rooms of Hong Kong, jade has been a currency of power, beauty, and meaning across centuries and civilisations. But it has also ended up in Western museums and collections, where it carries those meanings into entirely new hands. In this panel, a Louvre curator, a specialist in Chinese collections, and a Hong Kong–based jade specialist come together to ask what this stone has always carried with it — and what it still does when East meets West. Whether you know jade well or are encountering it seriously for the first time, this conversation will change how you look at it.
